MAKING STEPS

How to Layer Artwork for a Pop-Up Book

Separate a backdrop, middle ground and subject, prepare transparent cutouts and replace artwork in the phoenix template while checking depth and motion.

  1. Choose the story layers

Choose one main subject, then a background and middle ground. Let the background establish the setting and keep the subject's silhouette clear. Every detail does not need its own cutout.

  2. Prepare separate artwork

Prepare cutout subjects as images with transparent backgrounds. Remove leftover background pixels and shadows, and keep a continuous area at the base for mounting.

  3. Place and compare

Open the phoenix template and replace the artwork in the relevant element's image settings. Check the fully open composition, then intermediate positions, and adjust scale and depth.

Questions you may have

Should I split pop-up artwork into as many layers as possible?

Start with the subject, background and middle ground the story needs. Every detail does not need a separate paper piece. Each added layer needs another check of support, occlusion and closing space.

Why should a cutout retain an area at its base?

The subject needs continuous paper for its mounting connection. Remove background remnants and shadows from the contour, then inspect its base mounting area and the full opening motion after replacement.
